However, Virginia did not want newly-arrived slaves to diminish the value of its existing human property. Perceiving that slavery was under attack and fearing the loss of Virginia to the free states, the lower South decided to seced. The Deep South forced Virginia into secession. At that time, Virginia had no desire to deprive itself of the revenues from the domestic slave trade. Southern cotton supported the textile mills of England and the American North. Market forces dominated the growth and traffic of slave trade. Slave traders were demanding entrepreneurs who were fully absorbed in a highly competitive business" (Deyle, 2005). Slave traders acted as conduits of market values into the South, who then paved the way to consumerism and speculation and enhanced modern business practices to the other regions. Slaveholders denied that they sold slaves willingly and insulated themselve s from complicity in the human traffic. (Deyle, 2004). The slave trade has myriad dimensions. Southern farmers, planters, and speculators carried their human chattel with them whenever they move from Alabama to Virginia. Moreover, many slaveholders wanted to increase their enslaved workforces. The experience of being sold to slave traders and to a landowner was the most soul-rending experience most African Americans endured, aside from bodily punishments. An ex-slave Ben had recounted to interviewer Mary White Ovington in 1910 that every fall, the slaves would be sold in the same way that cattle was sold.Slaveholders would transfer them from one place to another as if they were mules or horses. Families would be split without consideration for husbands, wives and children. Those who had been sold to new masters never knew what to expect and they never had an inkling of what type of new master they would encounter in their new plantation. (Jewett and Allen, 2004). When Samuel Townsend, a slave owner from Virginia, needed more slaves, he bought them from traders in Richmond. This movement of slaves from the Upper South to the Gulf states presented possibilities for profitable speculations. Thousands of slaves born in Virginia showed up in Alabama during from 1820s to 1840s. Groups of slaves moved from Virginia and the Carolinas each fall. Montgomery was Alabama's largest slave sale site. Blacks being transported but encumbered by foot irons and chains were a pitiful sight on the roads. After railroads had been built in Montgomery with the Upper South slave markets, particularly during the 1850s, more traders and speculators used the railroads to move their human cargo (Jewett and Allen, 2004). Uncle Tom's Cabin converted the North to the cause of the slave. The book brought home to the heart of the North, and of the world, that the slave was a man. What Is Spatial Intelligence

Spatial intelligence is one of researcher Howard Gardners nine multiple intelligences. The word spatial comes from the Latin  spatium meaning occupying space.  A teacher may logically conclude that this intelligence involves how well a student may process information that is presented visually in one or more dimensions.  This intelligence includes the ability to visualize objects and rotate, transform, and manipulate them. Spatial intelligence is a foundational intelligence upon which many of the other eight  intelligences rely and interact. Engineers, scientists, architects, and artists are among those that Gardner sees as having high spatial intelligence.   Gardner seems to struggle a bit to give specific examples of those with high levels of spatial intelligence. Gardner does mention, in passing, famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso  as examples of those with high spatial intelligence. However, he gives few telling examples, even in the nearly 35 pages he spends on spatial intelligence in his  original work on the subject Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, published in 1983. He does give the example of Nadia, an autistic-savant child who could not speak but was able to create detailed, fully realized drawings by age 4. Importance in Education An article published in Scientific American by  Gregory Park,  David Lubinski,  Camilla P. Benbow  notes that the SAT—which is, essentially, a widely used IQ test to help colleges determine what students to accept—mainly measures  quantitative and verbal/linguistic abilities. Yet,  neglecting spatial abilities could have widespread consequences in education, according to the 2010 article, Recognizing Spatial Intelligence. Studies show that students [W]ith relatively strong spatial abilities tended to gravitate towards, and excel in, scientific and technical fields such as the physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Yet, standard IQ tests, such as the SAT, tend not to measure for these abilities. The authors noted: While those with verbal and quantitative strengths enjoy more traditional reading, writing, and mathematics classes, there are currently few opportunities in the traditional high school to discover spatial strengths and interests.​ There are subtests that can be added in order to test for  spatial reasoning ability such as the Differential Aptitude Test  (DAT). Three of the nine skills tested in the DAT are related to spatial intelligence: Abstract reasoning, Mechanical Reasoning, and Space Relations. The results from the DAT may provide a more accurate prediction of a students accomplishments. Without such subtests, however, students with spatial intelligence may be forced to find opportunities (technical schools, internships) on their own time, or wait until they graduate from traditional high schools. Unfortunately, many students may never be recognized for possessing this intelligence. Enhancing Spatial Intelligence Those with spatial intelligence have the ability to think in three-dimensions. They excel at mentally manipulating objects, enjoy drawing or art, like to design or build things, enjoy puzzles and excel at mazes. As a teacher, you can help your students enhance and strengthen their spatial intelligence by: Practicing visualization techniquesIncluding artwork, photography or drawing in classesGiving homework assignments in the form of puzzlesHaving students provide step-by-step instructions or directionsUsing maps and visual aidsCreate models Gardner says that spatial intelligence is a skill few are born with, yet while it is likely one of the more important intelligences—it is often the most neglected. Police brutality is an act that often goes unnoticed by the vast majority of white Americans. This is the intentional use of â€Å"excessive force by an authority figure, which oftentimes ends with bruises, broken bones, bloodshed, and sometimes even death† (Harmon). While law-abiding citizens worry about protecting themselves from criminals, it has now been revealed that they must also keep an eye on those who are supposed to protect and serve. According to the National Police Academy, in the past year, there have been over 7,000 reports of police misconduct; fatalities have been linked to more than 400 of these cases (Gul). Police brutality is often triggered by disrespect towards the police officer. According to the Journal of African American Studies 86% of the individuals who died in the custody of the NYPD between the years 1994 and 2000 were African American or Hispanic (Chaney). An example of this type of brutality is the case involving Rodney King. On March 31, 1991 Rodney King was pulled over by LA Police for speeding. The police said that King resisted arrest and that he was either on drugs or drunk. A bystander videotaped the officers tasing, kicking, stomping and beating King with batons. Rodney King suffered 57 blows from the batons and was kic ked 7 times. He also had 12 skull fractures, brain damage and kidney damage. The officers beat him for about two minutes. Four of the officers were charged with excessive force and found guilty. Officers Stacey Koon and Laurence Powell received 30 months in prison while Theodore Briseno and Timothy Wind were in the clear. As a result, the blacks in LA were not happy with the charges and caused riots. The LA riots lasted for six days and left 53 people dead (Chaney). Many people across the country are abused by the police, whose hands are responsible for protecting them.
